— WHY DIETETIC SUPPORT MATTERS

The medication changes how much you eat. What you eat still matters.

GLP-1 medicines like Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) work really well. But when your appetite drops this much, there's less room on the plate, and the research shows three places people commonly come unstuck.

— Sound familiar?

✓You're barely eating and not sure it's enough

✓You're worried about losing muscle, hair or energy

✓Nausea, constipation or reflux are getting you down

✓You've plateaued, or the "food noise" is creeping back

✓You want to come off it without the weight coming back

25–40%

Not all the weight lost is fat

In the trial body-scan studies, roughly a quarter to two-fifths of the weight people lost was lean mass, some of it muscle. Enough protein plus strength work helps you hold on to it.

Less Food

Every mouthful must count

Eating much less makes it easier to fall short on protein, fibre, fluids and key nutrients like iron, calcium and B12, which can show up as tiredness, constipation or hair shedding.

Two thirds

Stopping without a plan

In one major trial, people regained about two-thirds of the weight they'd lost within a year of stopping semaglutide. Habits built while you're on it are what you keep when you come off.

That's why NICE recommends Mounjaro alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, and why a 2025 joint advisory from four leading obesity and nutrition organisations put nutrition support at the heart of GLP-1 care.

"Think of the medication as the support act. The eating habits are the main event, they're what stays with you.."

-HOW WE CAN HELP

Practical, personal support for life on a GLP-1.

01

Getting enough protein

Your own protein target, and easy ways to hit it when you can only manage small portions, including vegetarian options.

02

Protecting your muscle

Pairing the right food with strength-based movement that fits your life, so more of what you lose is fat, and you stay strong.

03

Easing side effects

Food and timing tweaks for nausea, constipation, reflux and fatigue, and knowing when it's time to check in with your prescriber.

04

Eating enough of the good stuff

Checking your diet covers fibre, fluids, vitamins and minerals, so you feel well while you lose weight, not run down.

05

Eating in a way you can keep up

Family meals, eating out, a glass of wine, chocolate, building habits that work in real life, not a plan you'll abandon.

06

Coming off medication

A plan for when your appetite returns, whether you're stopping for cost, side effects or because you've reached your goal.

— HOW I CAN HELP

Support for every stage

01

    Starting out

Set up good habits from week one, so you're eating well as your dose goes up and side effects are easier to manage.

02

Already on it

Struggling to eat enough, feeling tired, or hit a plateau? We'll look at what you're eating and fine-tune it.

03

Coming off

Plan ahead for your appetite coming back, with a structure that helps you keep the weight you've worked hard to lose.

— GOOD TO KNOW

We don't prescribe

Your prescription, dose and any medical questions stay with your prescriber — your GP, NHS weight-management service or online pharmacy. We work alongside them on everything food-related, and can share a summary with them if you'd like.

Not started yet, or still deciding whether a GLP-1 is right for you? That's a great time to talk too.

Caroline Bletcher, Surrey weight loss dietitian

— YOUR DIETITIAN

Hi, I'm Caroline

I'm an experienced HCPC-registered dietitian and nutritionist, helping people with weight loss, women's health, IBS and digestive health and a range of other health conditions. Before moving into private practice, I spent several years working in the NHS, where I set up a specialist weight management service and was named Allied Health Professional of the Year.

YOUR QUESTIONS

GLP-1 questions, answered.

Do I need a dietitian if I'm on Mounjaro or Wegovy?

You don't have to have one, but it can make a real difference. The medication reduces your appetite; a Registered Dietitian makes sure what you do eat protects your muscle, keeps you well and builds habits that last once you stop.

How much protein do I need on a weight-loss injection?

It depends on your size, activity and health, so we work out a target that's right for you. As a starting point, try to include a protein food at every meal and snack, and eat it first, before you fill up.

Can you prescribe Mounjaro or Wegovy?

No. We don't prescribe or change doses. You'll keep your current prescriber, and we support you with the nutrition side alongside them.

I get my injection from an online pharmacy. Can you still help?

Yes. Wherever your prescription comes from NHS, private clinic or online pharmacy, the dietetic support is the same.

What should I eat when coming off Mounjaro or Wegovy?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer, which is why planning ahead helps. Regular, protein- and fibre-rich meals, a plan for when hunger returns and staying active all help. Ideally, start that work before your last dose.

Are appointments online or face to face?

Both. Online consultations are available anywhere in the UK, and face-to-face appointments are available in Surbiton.

Can I claim on my health insurance?

I'm recognised by insurers including Vitality, Cigna, AXA, WPA and Aviva. Cover varies by policy, so check with your insurer before booking.
